Ahi Tuna Tacos Recipe

Most people nowadays have had raw Ahi Tuna in sushi or sashimi — so eating it will not put them off as it might have, say, 20, 30 years ago. But having it as Ahi Tuna Tacos – especially with a wonton shell – is going to be a brand new experience for most of them. One that they will love. Trust us.

Ahi Tuna Tacos

These take a little planning and a bit of work to make but the results are utterly amazing.

Once you have the prep-work done, these can be easily assembled as you enjoy time with your guests. That make this a perfect Summer dish to have as a snack in the afternoon, while all of your guests are gathered and mingling in the kitchen or on the patio, before sitting down to dinner, enjoying a glass of wine.  Just assemble the tacos, place them in a nice taco rack and watch them disappear.

Ahi Tuna Tacos Recipe

Ingredients

Wonton Taco Shells

  • 3 – 4 round Wonton Wrappers
  • 2 – 3 tablespoons Canola Oil
  • 1 tablespoon Chili Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Onion Powder

Tuna

  • 10 ounces Ahi Tuna, chopped finely
  • 2 – 3 tablespoons sliced Green Onion
  • 2 – 3 tablespoons chopped Serrano Pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped Cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons Mirin
  • Zest and Juice from half a Lime
  • 2 tablespoon Sesame Oil
  • Salt, to taste

Toppings

  • 2 – 3 tablespoon Sour Cream
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced Scallion Tops
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced Radish
  • 1/2 of a sliced Avocado

Directions

Wonton Taco Shells

  1. Brush wontons with oil and drape over taco rack (see video).
  2. Season with chili, garlic and onion powder.
  3. Place taco rack in oven and bake at 275°F until they are golden brown, about 10 minutes, until golden brown and stiff.
  4. Remove and allow to cool.

Toppings

  1. Toss the sliced scallion tops and radish slices in a couple bowls of cold ice water and let them soak to crisp them up as you work.
  2. Starting at the top, with a very sharp knife, cut down into each avocado until you hit the seed. Cut completely around the avocado, top to bottom, touching the pit the entire time.
  3. Pull the two halves of the avocado apart and remove the seed with a spoon.
  4. Use the spoon to scoop the avocado out of the skin.
  5. Slice into strips.

Tuna

  1. Put the tuna in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add all other ingredients under “Tuna” above and mix well.

Assemble and Top

  1. Spoon a bit of the tuna mixture into each taco shell.
  2. Top with avocado slices.
  3. In a medium bowl, add drained green onion tops and radishes.
  4. Drizzle a bit of olive oil and lime juice and salt, to taste. Mix well.
  5. Grab a small pinch and add to the top of each taco.
  6. Finish with a bit of sour cream.
